We realize that each
summer, thousands hope to lose weight and change their appearance in preparation
for
a highly anticipated family vacation to some exotic location or other important
event. Then, months later they
rededicate themselves to lose weight as a sort of traditional New Year’s
resolution. There are successes and
there are failures and there are mixtures of both but the fact remains that the

estimate that 97 million American adults are overweight. While this is a
staggering figure,
when combined with the number overweight children and teens, and over half of
the population in America is
overweight or obese.
The problem of being overweight in America not only
affects physical health and appearance but also carries with
it a huge monetary cost. When combined, the totals, compiled by Wolf and Colditz
and published in Obesity
Research (1995), reached a staggering $99.2 billion in 1995 alone. This number
only includes lost wages, trips to
the doctor’s office, and research of diseases linked to being overweight (i.e.
diabetes, hypertension, colon and
breast cancers).
A sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are the primary causes of both obesity and
overweight and the various condi-
tions related to carrying extra weight. Watching too much TV has recently been
linked to obesity in children,
especially young children, according a study published in the June 2002 issue of
Pediatrics. Evidence is available
that obesity may be linked to a virus. Additionally, hormonal changes and
genetic factors can contribute to
unhealthy weight gain, and eventually being overweight. All other causes
notwithstanding, those who are over-
weight due to lifestyle choices realistically have the best chance at losing
weight – if they will commit to slight
dietary improvements and increase their exercise rates. Appropriate use of
dietary supplements may also be
beneficial to lose weight.
If someone wants to drop extra pounds the best and most
healthy thing to do is to change dietary habits. People
gain weight by taking in more calories than they burn. For example, running for
30 minutes burns about 300
calories and, after stepping off the treadmill, the choice is made to eat a 500
calorie hamburger versus eating a
50 calorie apple. Which is better? The difference between the hamburger and the
apple is the amount of fat
energy stored at the end of the day. It is a simplistic example intended to
identify a major point of emphasis
relating to weight loss – Eat slightly less, eat slightly better and the average
American will lose weight.
Don’t be drastic when altering the diet and make sure to continue to give
your body the nutrients it needs to
function properly. By consuming nutrient dense foods rather than those with
empty calories you can keep the
nutrients needed for daily function. Often, people follow unhealthy practices
relating to their diet in order to see
the short-term results, but don’t realize that there may be unhealthy
consequences to their heart, kidneys or
other body system with continued devotion to these types of diets. Studies
continue to confirm that a life long
behavioral change resulting in proper diet and exercise are the best methods to
control weight. Frequently failed
diets disrupt. and may even slow, the body’s metabolism.
Transfer factors
can be helpful in supporting the immune system against a virally-caused obese
condition. The
chromium,
manganese and cayenne all work to support healthy metabolism and are
commonly used as weight
loss ingredients in weight management supplements. There are many ingredients
that may be helpful to different
people and by finding which one works best, weight loss can be improved.
A
final word on the use of dietary supplements in relation to weight management
programs. It is okay to ask
questions about a particular supplement and what function it should have in your
body. Ask manufacturers
about the safety and efficacy of the product, but do the same with your
physician – ask for information, his
opinions and find out why he thinks the way he does.

decision to lose weight is an important one for various reasons and, as the only
one who can actually
make it happen, you have the ability to empower yourself with all available
information needed to safely reach
your weight loss goals. A healthy diet, exercise and proper use of dietary
supplements are proven ways to
begin a weight loss program and reach your goals.
